A trip to Hong Kong isn't complete without a visit to Victoria Peak, hopefully on a clear day! The vistas take in most of HK Island, Kowloon, the New Territories, outlying islands, mainland China and Macau.
The Victoria Peak Tower is a bowl shaped metallic land mark from which the views are outstanding. The Peak has been the preferred residence of the British since they arrived in 1841. Top government officials built homes there to get out of the stifling heat and were ferried up and down the steep slopes by Chinese coolies in sedan chairs. Up until 1945 Chinese were forbidden to live on the peak.
Of interest to LDS is the spot where Matthew Cowley dedicated HK for the preaching of the gospel in 1949. (Mormon missionaries first came in 1852 but left soon after because of the inhospitable weather and difficulty understanding the Chinese.) It took almost 100 years to return and Cowley marked the spot on Victoria Peak by etching the date into a rock wall around the side of the Peak.
The church knew of it's existence but the actual etching remained undiscovered for some time due to the fact that it blends in so well with the rock. The date - July 14, 1949.
