Octopus Card makes getting around Hong Kong easy! The size of a credit card, it fits into your purse or wallet. You add money to it at Seven Eleven stores or have your bank do it automatically. Then all you need to do is tap your wallet or purse on the yellow octopus card spot (see above) and it automatically deducts the amount you need for that particular event. It can be used on buses, ding-dings, the MTR (subway), and the ferry as well as a number of grocery stores, and bakeries .
The
MTR is a fast and efficient way of getting large numbers of people around HK. The many connections and additions to the system make it so you can get most anywhere in Hong Kong by MTR. Tap your Octopus card when you enter the system, and then again as you leave it. It will track you and deduct an amount commensurate with the distance you traveled. The MTR is very efficient and CLEAN -probably partially due to the rule that eating is forbidden!
Buses come in all shapes and sizes, from the huge double decker bus, to the single decker to the small size city bus. We decided this was our favorite way to get around (especially on the top level, front row). The bus drivers drive these buses like they're sports cars. Pedestrians look out! Cars rarely run red lights, and pedestrians cross
whenever they can, but at considerable risk. Pay with Octopus card as you get in
Finished in the late 1890's, the trolley, or
Ding Ding runs along Hennesey Road on a track. One of only a couple left in the world, it is a very popular and inexpensive way to get from one end of HK Island to the other (Runs East and West). It runs from 6am to midnight. Pay as you leave.
